Greetings From Sarasota- Day 7
Buck Showalter is a loyal guy. And clearly, the fact that he and his pitching coach Mark Connor are familiar with Ryan Drese has made for a compelling comeback story.
Drese, who won 14 games for Buck in Texas way back in 2004 and has not pitched in the majors since he was with the Nationals in 2006 had been thought to have an outsider’s chance to make the Birds’ staff. The injury to Justin Duchscherer and the ineffectiveness of Chris Tillman has given him even a better shot.
Well, today’s performance didn’t help. Drese entered a 9-4 game and proceeded in his first two innings to have it shoot up to 14-4. Drese gave up 5 runs in 2 innings. To his credit, he did come out and pitch a scoreless 8th inning.
