I get the notion that something that bothers you, can finally have a “last straw” affect. But, Dick Vitale and Mike Greenberg (Of Mike and Mike on ESPN Radio) both used Maryland’s hiring of Mark Turgeon as a jumping off point to rail against the “broken” system regarding Coaches and their contracts.
To them, I say “Where you been fellas?” This system has been like this for longer than apparently they care to remember.
How in the world do they think Gary Williams took his career from Washington DC-to Boston-to Columbus, OH and finally to College Park? Are they telling me that Gary Williams’ contracts on his way up and across the coaching ladder were all expiring?
While the system may be broken, at least in college hoops, they do this in the off-season. The most unseemly look inside this failing, are the football coaches who end up bailing on their Bowl Bound teams in order to take another job.
I just find it laughable that both Vitale and Greenberg use this example to make their case, when the guy leaving was benefiting from the broken system.
